Torrey’s Peak 14,267’ http://www.bradshawclimbing.com/Bradshaw_Climbing/Torreys_Peak.html With a good weather window along the Front Range EJ and I decided to give the Dead Dog Couloir a try. We had discussed this classic route for years but had never been able to line it up with our schedules. We decided to strap on heavy packs and spend a night in the backcountry as a shakedown for our upcoming Cascade’s trip in late June. We hiked up to the summer trailhead and headed up the standard route for about an hour until we found a flat spot to camp. The next morning we were on the trail at 5 A.M. and made steady progress towards the base of the route. At the base of the Dead Dog Couloir we broke out our crampons and ice axes and headed up the steepening snow slope for 1,000’ at a maximum angle of 50 degrees (average 45 degrees). After reaching the summit in 3 hours from our camp we made our way down the standard South Slopes route back to our camp. From our camp we made the uneventful trudge to the Jeep. Perfect weather and an amazing route well worth the wait.
