Wes Leads Pitch Three of Three Tiers (WI2+)

Wes

After 4 days in Summit County without snow EJ and I decided that the avalanche conditions in Officer’s Gulch would allow us to climb Three Tiers. Three Tiers is a moderate multi-pitch ice climb located between the town of Frisco and the Copper Mountain Ski Resort. The approach to the base of the climb took about 40 minutes but would have been a lot shorter if we had taken the path of least resistance (which we didn’t).  I took the first rope stretching lead over WI2+ ground. EJ then lead the crux of the route which was a near vertical 20’ step. I finished the route with another rope stretching pitch over WI2+ terrain. The route was a little wet but considering the warm temperature it could have been worse. From the top of the third pitch we made 5 single rope rappels to the base of the route which proved to be more ‘exciting’ than the climbing. We made good time back to Jeep for s roundtrip time of 4.5 hours.
