Mount Lady Washington

February 2010

Ever since moving to Colorado Jim had Martha high on his ‘to do” list. Yesterday EJ, Jim and I finally marked it off his list. We started from the Long’s Peak Trailhead at 4:00 A.M. and made steady progress to the base of the route arriving at 7:45 A.M. I lead the first two pitches over varied terrain. Jim then took the lead for the routes first step which normally consists of a 15’ step of ice. Yesterday however, there was no ice in the first step which made the climbing considerably more difficult (5.6+). EJ lead the final pitch which did contain ice but considerably less than last May.

From the top of the technical climbing we traversed east and met Mount Lady Washington’s East Ridge route. We made our way back to the trailhead arriving around 5:30 P.M. for a 13.5 hour round trip. Even though the route wasn’t in great condition, we moved slowly and the day ended up being longer than we had anticipated we all had a good time.
