Chasm Junction Camping

A winter climb of Long’s has been on my radar for years and with some spare time and a marginal weather window we decided to give it a shot. EJ had recently purchased a new Mountain Hardwear Trango 2 tent and we figured that we’d try that out too. Jim, Eric, EJ and I met on Saturday afternoon at the I-25 & Highway 34 interchange and headed up the the Long’s peak Trailhead. The approach was brutally windy and after we arrived at Chasm Junction we decided to call it a day. We figured that the North Face of Long’s was out but if the wether improved we could give the the Loft or Martha a shot. After setting up our tents on 60 mph gusts (no small feat) we settled in for the night. None of us got any sleep due to the estimated 70 mph winds and we all woke up battered the following morning. After the blustery night none of us had much of an appetite for a suffer-fest that the Loft would entail so we packed it up and headed back to the trailhead. Maybe it’s time to try another area?!?
